Embrace Simplicity
Tonight, on the eve of Thanksgiving, family celebrations, and an abundance of food and drink, let us consider the beauty of simplicity. In a world that seems busier and more crowded than ever, we must remember that less is more. I am as guilty as anyone for spending too much time seeking bigger, more dramatic pictures. It is okay to dream big, but every large, attention-grabbing scene hosts many small, less conspicuous scenes of value. Take the time to look for them. Find fulfillment in their simplicity. During October, the woods of Maine are full of colorful grandeur. The foliage can be immense and breathtaking which, as a photographer, is exciting. One afternoon, my group and I walked the shoreline of a lake hoping to photograph pockets of color and colorful reflections. It was there, under towering white pine trees, that I created one of my favorite images from the week and year. The photo lacks the grandeur or foliage of autumn in Maine, but it fills my heart. All that matters about something that affects you is that it affects you. Being thankful is necessary, but we do not need to weigh ourselves down with too much stuff. Happiness is not linked to how big or how much. True gratitude is found in your heart. Happy Thanksgiving to all.
